September 24 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, portrait photography was, at times, used to categorize and control—to make assumptions about race, gender, and identity. Ayana V. Jackson uses her camera to take these old photographs apart, to ask questions about what they claim and what they hide. Often she stages her own body in these deconstructed portraits, claiming the authority to define herself rather than let history do it for her. Join us to hear her talk about photography, family, identity, and what it means to reclaim the power to be seen on your own terms.
