Ulrich Friends with Benefits

Formerly Salon Circle

We’re debuting a new program for our essential supporters!

Since 2007, our amazing Salon Circle members have provided indispensable support for programs, community outreach, and student engagement through philanthropic contributions. They’ve allowed us to dream big and remain a free community resource open to everyone, all while enjoying specially crafted events and experiences developed to enhance their enjoyment of the Ulrich collection and deepen their connections to the arts. We are so grateful, and want to show our appreciation by debuting a new program for our adventurous, art-loving donors!

Salon Circle is now Ulrich Friends with Benefits

This cheeky new moniker reflects our strategy to bring more celebration, adventure, joy, friendships, and fun to your life while you enjoy all the Ulrich Museum has to offer. We've curated seven art experiences for you, inspired by UFWB's 2023 theme: Cabinet of Curiosities.

A precursor to museums, the cabinet of curiosities—also known as a cabinet of wonder, wonder-room, or wunderkammer—emerged in the sixteenth century as a designated place in the home of globetrotting collectors where their beloved treasures were displayed. These items were sometimes related to natural history, geology, ethnography, or archaeology. They could be religious or historical relics, antiquities or works of art. We look forward to bringing unique and quirky programming to you as we highlight the role collections and collecting play in the art world. Here are the events we have planned for Spring 2023:

February 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m.: Wichita Wunderkammer: Take a peek at the oddities on display at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum and enjoy a UFWB kick-off cocktail reception.

March 16: Cabinets of Curiosity | The Birth of Museums: Executive and Creative Director Vivian Zavataro will share the history behind the evolution of modern museums while you enjoy dinner at the Ulrich.

April 20: Curious Collectors: Kansas City artist Philo Northrup, famous for his assemblage work and ArtCars, and Erica Nelson, creator of Lucas, Kan., roadside attraction The World's Largest Collection of the World's Smallest Versions of the World's Largest Things, will share their obsessions at the Ulrich Museum. Plus, get a peek at a new book about unique collections and collectors, "Crave Covet Collect," from author Sondra Langel and photographer Larry Schwarm.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED: Wine, beer, and light appetizers are included during the program. An optional curated dinner at First Mile Kitchen is available for an additional charge of $55 per person with cash bar. Members should RSVP for the program or the optional dinner and program by emailing ann.keefer@wichita.edu, or cal (316) 978-6646 no later than 5 p.m., Monday, April 17.

June 2-3: A Curious Adventure: A bus excursion to Oklahoma City for a behind-the-scenes view of the latest interactive exhibit created by Factory Obscura, with a visit to the Philbrook Museum of Art and The Gathering Place in Tulsa.

We'll reveal three more events that will take place this fall at the Summer Exhibition Opening Celebration, May 25!
