Ceaseless, Ever-Present, Vigilance, 2026
Hutchinson is a multidisciplinary artist and recent graduate from Wichita State University with a BFA in Applied Drawing. Ceaseless, Ever-Present, Vigilance transforms the isolated privacy of a restroom space into an experiential and interactive atmosphere.
Through this immersive installation, Hutchinson examines an environment where privacy and exposure exist simultaneously, obscuring the relationship between artist and viewer. As visitors enter the restroom, their routine is interrupted, function becomes obstructed, and the dynamic is shifted; this site is no longer one of privacy, and the observer becomes the observed.
Elements such as peeling paint, cracked plaster, faux mildew, and morphing shadows encourage viewers to trace familiar contours and acknowledge the faces that linger in between boundaries of comfort and disturbance.
Participation from those willing enough to excessively gaze upon their reflection exposes subjects to hallucinatory warping, allowing the visages within the cracks to shift.
