This exhibition brings together works from the Ulrich Museum of Art collection alongside paintings generously loaned by two local collectors. Several of the Ulrich's Shimomura works have not been on public view in recent years, making this a special opportunity to experience these pieces together in one exhibition.
Museum collections are dynamic. Roger Shimomura, a third-generation Japanese American artist, is known for paintings and performance works that combine Japanese visual traditions with American popular culture. Through humor, irony, and bold imagery, Shimomura explores themes of identity, xenophobia, racism, and cultural stereotypes.
