Join us for the unveiling of GLeo’s (Nathalia Gallego) mural at the Duerksen Amphitheater! From 4:30 to 7 p.m., this Friday, May 3, enjoy a pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration with speakers, live music by Mayberry Middle School Mariachi Band, performances by Raices De Mi Tierra Ballet Folklorico, Elatino Dogos Y Hamburguesas food truck, DJ Carbon, an appearance by Belonging Plaza, and more. This event is free and everyone is welcome.
Visiting Muralist GLeo (Nathalia Gallego Sanchez) has been painting a mural at WSU's Duerksen Amphitheater throughout April. This project, ADELANTE JUNTOS /Forward Together/: The Duerksen Amphitheater Mural Project is in conjuction with the exhibition Urban Canvas: Exploring Muralism in Wichita, on view through June 8 in the Beren Gallery.
Nathalia Gallego Sanchez AKA GLeo is a Colombian street artist and muralist who was engaged by the Horizontes Project in 2018 to work with Wichita photographers of color to design, and then executed the painting of, El Sueño Original, (The Original Dream). At the time of its creation, the work was recognized as the world’s largest mural painted by a single artist. The mural used more than 650 gallons of acrylic paint to cover 50,000 square feet of “canvas,” spanning the 17 bins of the east side of the grain elevator located at 519 E. 20th Street North in Wichita.
ADELANTE JUNTOS /Forward Together/: The Duerksen Amphitheater Mural Project, is directed by the Ulrich Museum of Art and Armando Minjárez with support from Wichita State University’s Office of Hispanic Initiatives, Student Government Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO), Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of the President and the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing.
