DESCRIPTION:Join Ulrich Registrar Jo Cox as she examines the works of Symbolist artist Maurice Denis (1870-1943)\, who was active in Lugne-Poe’s Théâtre de l’Oeuvre and Paul Fort’s Théâtre d’Art in the early 1890s\, where Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) debuted his marionette dramas that became immediate successes\, such as The Intruder (1891) and The Interior (1895). Denis’s early Nabis works seem to borrow from Maeterlinck's iconography\, depicting symbols such as the woods\, the tower\, isolation\, and waiting\, to communicate his own imagery\, conflated with Christian narrative and Symbolist principles.  These themes are never more apparent than when Denis was frequenting the theatre. \nFree and open to all.
